Jewar airport in Greater Noida faces connectivity challenges
The world's fourth and India's largest proposed airport at Jewar area of Greater Noida is facing connectivity challenges.
The proposed airport, for which over 70 percent of land acquisition is done, is about 89 kilometers from the Indira Gandhi International Airport -the only international airport in the national capital region.
With such a massive distance, the travel time varies from two to three hours, depending on the traffic conditions. At present, one has to cross Delhi, Noida and Greater Noida to reach Jewar through the Yamuna Expressway.
The authorities concerned have chalked out a plan for the metro connectivity, but because of many stations, the travel time remained somewhat similar to that of the road transport.
"Primary plan for the metro connectivity of the proposed airport from Delhi has nearly 35 stops. With these many stops the metro to the airport will turn out to be a usual metro train and it will take around one and a half to two hours to complete the journey. This plan doesn't seem feasible for the largest airport in the country. Now, we are planning to curtail the number of stations or make it on the lines of the existing Airport Express Metro line in Delhi, with a handful of stations," said Thakur Dhirendra Singh, MLA, Jewar.
With companies like Ambanis, Adanis, GMR, Mumbai Airport Authority, Hong Kong Airport Authority and many others showing interest in the construction of the airport, the biggest challenge for the local authority is to shorten the 89-kilometer-long travel time from the IGI Airport. The estimated annual footfall at the proposed airport, when it becomes fully functional, will be around 50 lakh.
