Jewar airport bid: Zurich AG gets key panel nod, over to state govt
Greater Noida: Switzerland’s Zurich Airport International
AG, which recently won the contract to build the proposed airport in Jewar,
received approval from UP’s Project Monitoring and Implementation Committee
(PMIC) on Monday.
Sparking renewed hopes for the project and the development
of areas around it, the PMIC gave its nod for the selection of the operator as
the concessionaire of the Noida International Greenfield Airport.
The selected concessionaire is the operator of Zurich
airport in Switzerland, along with eight other airports in Latin American
cities. It had also built and operated the Bengaluru airport for ten years,
before moving out.
“The PMIC on Monday recommended the selection of Zurich
Airport International AG as the concessionaire for Jewar Airport. The final
approval will be given by the state cabinet during its meeting,” said
Shailendra Bhatia, the nodal officer for Jewar airport, NIAL.
With a bid of Rs 400.97 per passenger, the Zurich airport
operator won the bid on November 29 for constructing and operating the Jewar Airport Projects. It will sign a contract for 40 years. Following PMIC’s approval, the
only pending formality is the approval from the UP state cabinet, which is also
expected to come through this week.
“Once the cabinet approves the selected concessionaire, the
final agreement will be prepared. Working out the financials and other details
may take a couple of months, after which construction will be started,” said
Arunvir Singh, the CEO, Noida International Airport Limited and YEIDA.
The Jewar international airport will begin operations in its
first phase with two runways — expandable to six by the end of the fourth phase
— and is chasing a deadline of late 2023 or early 2024.
Zurich AG (FZ) won the bid by a margin of Rs 40 per passenger,
defeating three other groups that were all found to be technically qualified.
Adani Enterprises, which won bids to manage six airports last year was second
at Rs 360. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which is backed by the GMR
group that runs the Hyderabad airport and is constructing airports in Goa and
abroad, was third at Rs 351. Anchorage Infrastructure Investments Holdings Ltd
— part of the Fairfax Group, whose Fairfax India Holdings owns 54% of Bangalore
airport — quoted Rs 205.
